a. 1. Pricked 2. Mancuvers 3. Indefinable 4. Scrutinized 5. Devouring 6. Muzzle 7. Intermittently 8. Ominously 9. Masts 10. Seafaring
b. "There’s a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often”, and it follows behind us”. We chose this because it is a main thing that happened in the story.
c. The climax was when Stefano met the Colomber and the Colomber gave him the Perla del Mare. We chose this as the climax because it is the turning point in the story and it’s when the main event happened. d(i)The lesson is like the moral of the story or the lesson to be learned from the story. d(ii). The curiosity was caused by the Colomber. Stefano was very curtious of the Colomber because he wanted to know if the Colomber was real and to figure out why he was following him. d(iii). This curiosity lead to the character because he talked to the Colomber and finally got to figure out why the Colomber was following him. d(iv). Good fortune and a Pearl. Also good luck. d(v). A lesson that can be learned from the story is to face your fears. If Stefano would have faced his fear of meeting the Colomber earlier he would have the Per de Mare and he wouldn’t have lived his whole life in fear.

A- Astonished-“But Stefano stood there, astonished, his heart pounding.” Ominously –“Stefano, there’s no doubt, the colomber has ominously chosen you…” Intermittently -“But looking carefully, Stefano could perceive a small black point which intermittently surfaced on the water…” Fleeting-“And you kept on fleeting.” Assurance-“Having gotten the assurance…” Obsession- “…became a secret obsession for Stefano.” Victim-“And the strange thing is this; no one can see the colomber except the victim himself and his blood relations” Inland-“His father sent him to study at an inland city…” Resign-“You must resign yourself.” Shark –“It’s a tremendous, mysterious shark, more clever than man.” B- When Stefano sees the colomber rising from the water and tells his father. “…That is a colomber. It’s the fish that sailors fear above all others, in every sea in the world.” c- When Stefano goes to finally kill the Colomber and it talks to him telling him that he has been sent to find him and give him the pearl. “‘Now I am going to meet it,’ he announced. ‘It isn’t right to disappoint it. But I shall struggle, with all my might’” d-i. What is a lesson? A lesson is something that teaches you something. ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? His father telling him about how bad the colomber is and that he couldn’t return to sea again. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? It led to him constantly trying to get away from the Colomber therefore making him old and bitter. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? He ends up going to sea then after years, goes to kill the Colomber. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. To not run from your fears because they could have a really good outcome. Like how he ran away from the Colomber all of his life when he could have gotten the pearl and enjoyed his life.

a) Placid-…on the placid sea… Abyss-…but greater still is the attraction of the abyss… Inexorable-…with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument… Obstinately-…obstinately waiting for him… Scrutinized-…and he scrutinized the surface of the sea.. Expedient-…with every expedient the boy was dissuaded.. Intrepid-…and his intrepid spirit… Phosphorescent-…offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere… Merchantman-…he could subsequently by a true merchantman… Indomitable-…an indomitable impulse dragged him without rest…
b) The inciting incident is when Stefano encounters the Colomber in the abyss. We chose this incident because this where the whole story starts. This is where Stefano begins his obsession with the sea and the Colomber. “’” Don’t you see anything over there?” he asked his companions from time to time, pointing at the wake. “No, we don’t see anything at all. Why?” “I don’t know. It seemed to me…” “you didn’t see a Colomber, by any chance did you?” the sailors asked laughing and touching wood. “Why are you laughing? Why are you touching wood?” “Because the Colomber is an animal that spares no one. And if it has began to follow this ship, it means on of us is doomed.” (page 38)
c) The climax is when Stefano goes back to the sea to find the Colomber and kill it. We chose that because his obsession of the sea took over. “Stefano began to sail, giving proof of his sea worthiness, his resistance to fatigue, and his intrepid spirit. He sailed and sailed, and in the wake of his ship, day and night, in good weather and in storms, the Colomber trudged along.” (page 39)
d(i) A lesson is something to be taught or learned. It’s the moral of the story. d(ii) The curiosity was the sea and to find the Colomber. We know this because he said he had an obsession with the sea. d(iii) It made him go insane and pursue to find the colomber. d(iv) He finds the Colomber and he harpoons the Colomber and ends up killing a precious stone that will give him joy. d(v) We can learn to not assume all rumors are true. Also, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, like Stefano judged the Colomber by it’s face and followings. “I have not pursued you around the world to devour you, as you thought.”

1. Colomber- It was “his” colomber , slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him. Phosphorescent- … is offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere… Inland- … to study at an inland city… Abyss- … the attraction of the abyss. Merchantman- … subsequently buy a true merchantman. Placid- …on the placid sea… Intrepid- …his intrepid spirit… Indomitable- An indomitable impulse… Sever- … strength to sever himself… Inexorable-… with the inexorable obstinacy…
b) The inciting incident is when Stefano sees the colomber for the first time. When he sees it for the first time his father could not see it. If Stefano did not see the shark the story would not have happened because he’d continue a life at sea with no fears of sharks. “ from then on with every expideint the boy was dissuaded from his disire to go to sea"
c) The climax of the story was when Stefano went out to sea to approach the colomber. This is the climax because the most tension in the story is happening during this part. “Suddenly the colomber’s horrible snout emerged at the side of the boat,” has the most tension of the story.
d1) A lesson is something that you learn. You can learn it from someone or from mistakes.
d2) The curiosity of Stefano is caused by not knowing what the colomber really wanted. Stefano was told from his father that it was out to devour him and he had to stay on land for the rest of his life. Stefano never got to see that the colomber really was like until he was old and could not enjoy what the colomber had for him.
d3)He became more addicted to the sea. He was brought back again and again because he was very curious about the colomber.
d4)He finally went to the sea to face the colomber and see what was going on with it. He met it and it gave him the pearl. He was discovered two months later as a skeleton holding a rock with two fingers.
d5) We learned to never listen to what other people say and to go with what you think is right. He listened to his father that said he should never go to sea again. When he does return he is old, miserable and close to death he feels. The colomber is actually a messenger assigned to bring a pearl of good fortune to Stefano. He wasted his life running from something that wasn’t what he thought.

a. …to observe something that intermittently rose to the surface… …. And he scrutinized the surface of the sea… ….slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him… ….With every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea… ….with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument… …. And his intrepid spirit…
B. When he sees the Colomber. This fuels the entire story until the end, and without that happening, there would be no story. C. When he meets the Colomber face to face. He finds out that the Colomber wasn’t trying to harm him in any way like his father told him. D. A lesson is something you learn from. You take past experiences and apply them to your life. The shark caused the curiosity. He came back to the sea to try and overcome it.
It made him go insane. He was miserable from running from the shark.
He was miserable in life. He finds out the shark wanted to give him good luck.
5. That you need to face your fears and to not let something prevent you from being happy. He lived miserably avoiding the Colomber, but then later found out, as he was dying, that the Colomber only wanted to give him something that would bring him happiness. If he had faced it earlier in life, he would have had a happier life.
