3a. Intermittently: "When the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that had intermittently rose to the surface…." Scrutinized: "…and he scrutinized the surface of the sea, in line with the wake." Obstinately: "…slowly moving back and forth his colomber obstinately waiting for him." Expedient: "From then on, with every expedient the boy was dissuaded." Inexorable: "…with the inexorable obstinacy of fatal instrument." Abyss: "…the attraction of the abyss." Intrepid: "…and his intrepid spirit." Sever: "…he did not find the strength to sever himself." Indomitable: "An indomitable impulse.." Placid: "…on the placid sea." 3b. The inciting incident was Stefano going to see the colomber. It is the inciting incident because he goes to finally face his fear. It happened when he was older and tired of waiting around for it. "Now I am going to meet it," he announced." 3c.The climax was when he found out the colomber wasn't actually trying to kill him. "I have not pursued you around the world to devour you, as you thought. I was charged by the King of the Sea only to deliver this to you." And the shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phospherescent sphere." 3d. i. A lesson is something you take back from the experience. Usually you learn a lesson from a story. ii. All the stories he heard about the colomber and he couldn't really risk it because he could die. He kept going out to sea day after day to go towards the colomber. iii. It made him fearless after he faced the colomber. He had nothing else to lose. iv. He found out that there was nothing to be afraid of. Also, the colomber didn't choose people to kill, but to give them gifts that would bring them luck, peace, and love. v. The lesson of the story is don’t believe everything you hear from people because not everything anyone says is true. He learned that because everyone that the colomber would kill anyone that it chose and he had begun to believe it. The more you hear something, the more likely it is that you will start to believe it. After he had faced the colomber, he had seen there was nothing to be afraid of, the colomber never wanted to kill him, but give him a gift.

3a. 1. Eager-Stefano, who was a serious and eager boy,… 2. Colomber- That is a colomber. 3. Obsession- … became a secret obsession for Stefano. 4. Ship- … and the owner of a fine sailing ship… 5. Doomed- … it means that one of us is doomed. 6. Obstinately- … obstinately waiting for him. 7. Pier- … hurry to the end of the pier for some kind of verification. 8. Phosphorescent-…offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere. 9.Abyss- … but greater still is the attraction of the abyss. 10. Expedient- … with every expedient the boy was dissuaded… 3b. The inciting incident is when Stefano discovers that he has been chosen by the colomber. We chose this because it starts the story's problem and sets the tone for the rest of the story. …" Oh, I wish I had never listened to you…" "…That is a colomber. It's the fish that sailors fear above all others." 3c. The climax was when Stefano met with the colomber in the small boat. This is the part with the most tension in the story. "… he took his leave of the crew, ordered a small boat to be lowered into the sea, and boarded it…" "Suddenly the colomber's horrible snout emerged at the side of the boat…" 3d1. A lesson is something that you learn from somebody or something that benefits you and helps you in your life. An example is one like "Don't judge a book by its cover." 3d2. He was curious of the colomber to see if it truly was following him forever like his father said. We know this because Stefano could never stop thinking about the sea. 3d3. It made him develop in a way that he wanted to go to the sea which was against his father's word. His mentality wanted him to be near or in the sea. 3d4. The outcome was that he went against his father's word and faced the colomber. By doing this, he received the Perla del Mare. 3d5. The lesson that we can learn from this story is to not let other people dictate your life. Stefano let his father control what he does in his life instead of facing his fears and choosing his own fate. By doing this, he cannot do what he wants to without being fearful of the colomber.

1. Abyss- …but greater still is the attraction of the abyss. 2. Sever- …he did not find the strength to sever himself from it. 3. Placid- …on the placid sea… 4. Inexorable- …with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument. 5. Expedient- …with every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea. 6. Intermittently- …to observe something that intermittently rose to the surface… 7. Attracted- …which attracted him intently. 8. Worried- Now I'm worried about you. 9. Doomed- …it means one of us is doomed. 10. Passion- …his passion for the sea…
The inciting incident is when Stefano's father takes him out to sea and Stefano spots the colomber. This is the part of the story that really sets the tone. "When the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that intermittently rose to the surface at a distance of two to three hundred meters, in line with the ship’s wake.” During this point of the story the conflict is brought to attention.
The climax of the story takes place when the colomber and Stefano finally meet face to face. “’Here I am with you finally,’ Stefano said. ‘Now it’s just the two of us.’ And gathering his remaining strength, he raised the harpoon to strike.” At this point, the greatest tension and suspense is occurring.
My group believes that a lesson is something that is learned from a situation that someone goes through or hears about. There are lessons to learn from in every single day
The colomber caused curiosity for Stefano. He always wondered what would happen if he faced the colomber and he was always going to the sea and checking if the colomber was still there.
Curiosity caused him to always be thinking about the colomber and wondering what would happen if he confronted it. It always made him wonder what would happen to him if he went back out to sea and made him grow old and weary much faster because he was always thinking about the colomber.
Curiosity is what caused Stefano to go back on the sea. It is what drove him to want to confront the colomber at last because he wasn’t completely sure what would happen. Curiosity is really what drove him to do everything that he did in life because he always wanted to know what the outcome would be.
My group believes that the main lesson to be learned is that just because everybody has one belief or feeling doesn’t mean that you can’t develop your own feeling and beliefs. In the story, Stefano is told by his dad and his fellow sailors that the colomber will attack and devour whoever it chooses. Instead of developing his own beliefs and feelings about the colomber, he bases it off of other people’s beliefs. The lesson is that you should always develop your own beliefs and investigate situations for yourself.

3a. 1. maneuver- Stefano, Who had never been on a ship, happily wandered around on deck, admiring the complicated maneuvers of the sails. 2. Scrutinized- …And he scrutinized the surface of the sea, in line with the wake. 3. Ominously- Stefano, there's no doubt, the colomber has ominously chosen you, and as long as you go to sea, it will give you no peace. 4. Dissuaded- From then on, with every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea. 5. Fundamentally- … although he fundamentally considered it unnecessary 6. Hostile- the idea of that hostile creature waiting for him day and night became a secret obsession for Stefano. 7. Worthiness- Stefano began to sail, giving proof of his sea worthiness. 8. Slacken- but Stefano did not slacken. 9. Inheritance- when he felt he was master of his trade, he used his modest inheritance to acquire a small steam freighter with a partner… 10. Indomitable- an indomitable impulse dragged him without rest, from one ocean to another.
3b. The inciting incident in the story of the colomber is when Stefano’s father took him out on the sea. Stefano would have never been faced the ‘curse’ of the colomber if he had never gone out to sea, but even if Stefano had not gone out with his father, he would have eventually gone out. Stefano had an interest in the sea when he was younger which only grew as time passed. He would have eventually went out and seen the colomber. The only difference would be that the colomber wouldn’t have been a threat to Stefano his whole life, only the point in which he saw the colomber.
3c. We think that the climax of the story was when Stefano had taken up his father’s business. Even though his father had passed and the threat of the colomber was over his head, he still went on to choose the life of a sailor. Stefano knew that the colomber was following him and would not stop until it got what it wanted. He probably did it because he couldn’t let go of his love for the sea and the fact that he wanted to continue his father’s business.
3di.A lesson is something that you have learned from your own or someone else’s mistake. Lessons can be learned through multitudes of ways, but you have to be open to possibilities and know how to find or hear the hidden messages of anything. You can even find a lesson to be learned through posters, quotes, books, and more, but if you don’t take these messages to heart, then you will never truly know the meanings.
3dii. Stefano’s curiosity was induced because of the simple fact that everybody has a fear factor or the sense of excitement. The element of fear or excitement can be dangerous in some cases. Stefano’s case could have been dangerous if the story of the colomber was true, but thanks to his own curiosity he found out the story was just a tall tale passed down throughout the generations. Everyone has the choice to face their fear one day, but it’s their common sense or conscience telling them not to, they have to fight this urge and face their fear. Stefano’s own curiosity was mainly fear because he wanted to know what the colomber would do, but all his life he couldn’t get the courage to confront the colomber.
3diii.Stefano’s story was based on the enticing fear of the colomber. The reader never knew what would happen to Stefano next. Would he be on land forever? Or would he finally face his fear and end up getting eaten or killed by the colomber. If the colomber had never followed Stefano, he would have taken up his father’s business as a sailor and lived a happy and successful life, also without disappointing his mother. Since the colomber was in the story though, Stefano had the crushing weight of this thought on him causing him to move inland and start a different job away from the sea. He had to take every precaution to make sure the colomber never found him or hurt him, but whenever he went near the sea and looked over the horizon, he could always see the colomber, waiting for him.
3div.The outcome of Stefano’s curiosity leads him to start up his father’s business later on in life instead of earlier than he wanted to. It made him ‘take baby steps’ or start off slowly and gradually try to forget the colomber but the thought was always in the back of his mind. So, during his old years he went out and faced the colomber, but took a harpoon with him just incase the legend was true. He ends up talking to the colomber and finding out the colomber wasn’t there to kill him or harm him in anyway. The colomber instead was following him due to orders from the king of the sea and bring him a pearl that brought power, luck, love, and peace of mind. Stefano ends up dying on the little boat he took and all that was left of him was a sun bleached skeleton with a pearl in the grasp of his hands.
3dv.The lesson in the story of The Colomber was to not take things to heart and let anything anyone says affect your life. Stefano made this mistake by taking the tale of the colomber to heart and let that fear envelope him. He moved inland and lived there for half his life but eventually went back out to the sea and faced the colomber. He finds out the tale was not true and regrets it because he let it conduct his life. He let that fear always lead something that he had to do. He couldn’t stop it and when he found out he was upset. He could have avoided this if he just faced his fear earlier and gotten the pearl.

A) Intermittenly- adj. from time to time. "…To observe something that intermittently..." Scrutinized- v. looked at carefully. "…He scrutinized the surface..." Obstinately- adv. Stubbornly, persistently. "It was 'his' colomber, slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him." Expedient- n. means, resource, device used in an emergency. "…With every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea." Inexorable- adj. unyeilding, immovable, unchangeable. "…With the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument." Abyss- n. bottomless depth, here, something byond understanding or too deep for measurement. "…The attraction of the abyss." Interpid- adj. fearless, brave. "…His resisteance to fatigue, and his intrepid spirit." Sever- v. serparate, break or cut off. "…He did not find the strength to sever himself from it." Indomitable- adj. unquerable, not easily, discouraged, or defeated. "An imdomitable impulse dragged him without rest…" Placid- adj. undisturbed, calm, tranquil. "…On the placid sea, shrouded in the nocturnal shadows." B) Stefano first saw the colomber for the first time in his life. The colomber won't leave Stefano alone. "It was 'his' colomber, slowly moving back and forth…"
C)Stefano finally decides to talk to the colomber about why he was following Stefano. I chose this because we don't know why the colomber is really following Stefano until he talks to the colomber. "'Here I am with you, finally,' Stefano said. 'Now it's just the two of us.'" D)1)The lesson is that you can't always believe all of the rumors you hear. "…From the descriptions I have heard many times, I immediately recognized it." D2)Stefano knew deep down that the colomber would not hurt him. "From then on, with every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea." D3)Stefano grew an obbsession to travel around the sea later on in life. "Stefano began to sail, giving proof of his seaworthiness…" D4)Stefano died two or more months after the colomber finally gave him the pearl of the sea. "In the boat, still seated, was a sun-bleached skeleton; between the little bones of its fingers it grasped a small ound stone." D5)The lesson we can learn from this story is that you can not judge someone or something by the way he, she, or it looks or acts. "'I have not pursued you around the world to devour you, as you thought. I was charged by the King of the Sea only to deliver this to you.'" "'How wrong it all is. I managed to condemn myself, and I have ruined your life.'"

3.) A.) STEFANO ROI: When Stefano Roi was twelve, he asked his father, a sea captain and the owner of a fine sailing, to take him on board as his birthday gift. CURIOSITY: when the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that had intermittenly rose to the surface at a distance of two or three hundred kilometers. ASTERN: when the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that had intermittenly rose to the surface at a distance of two or three hundred kilometers. AROUSED: when the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that had intermittenly rose to the surface at a distance of two or three hundred kilometers. SHIP: although the ship was indeed moving fast, carried by a great quarter of wind, that thing always maintained the same distance. SHARK: it is a tremendous, mysterious shark, more clever than man. AQUIRE: when he felt he was master of his trade, he used his modest patrimony to acquire a small stream freighter with a partner, then he became the sole proprietor of it, and thanks to a series of successful shipments, he could subsequently buy a true merchantman, setting out with always more ambitious aims. PATRIMONY: when he felt he was master of his trade, he used his modest patrimony to acquire a small stream freighter with a partner, then he became the sole proprietor of it, and thanks to a series of successful shipments, he could subsequently buy a true merchantman, setting out with always more ambitious aims. AMBITIOUS: when he felt he was master of his trade, he used his modest patrimony to acquire a small stream freighter with a partner, then he became the sole proprietor of it, and thanks to a series of successful shipments, he could subsequently buy a true merchantman, setting out with always more ambitious aims. MERCHANTMAN: when he felt he was master of his trade, he used his modest patrimony to acquire a small stream freighter with a partner, then he became the sole proprietor of it, and thanks to a series of successful shipments, he could subsequently buy a true merchantman, setting out with always more ambitious aims.
B.) What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). What I found to be the inciting incident of the text was when Stefano sees the Colomber for the first time. I chose this as the inciting incident because it is basically what started off the story.“ Papa, come here and see….”
c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened. I think that the climax of the story is when Stefano comes back to the sea to finally overcome his fear. I chose this as the climax because I think that it is the most exciting and important part of the story.
d. i.) There is a lesson to be learned from this story. What is a lesson? To me, a lesson is what you get out of a situation.
ii.What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? What caused him curiosity was the story and him wanting to overcome his fears.
iii.How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? Because he had to overcome his fear in order to feel happy.
iv.What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? He overcame his fear and found out that his fear was nothing to worry about.
v.After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. The lesson that we can learn from this story is that overcoming your fears is sometimes a very important part of your life. “And the shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere.” It deals with the lesson because that is what it was based on.

a. Alas-"Alas!" Said the captian, shaking his head sadly. Dissuaded- From then on, with every expedient the boy was dissusded from his desire to go to sea. Abyss- Great are the satisfactions of an industrious, well-to-do, and quiet life, but greater still the attraction of the abyss. Interpid- Stefano began to sail, giving proof of his sea-worthiness, his resistance to fatigue, and his intrepid spirit. Strife-His courage in times of strife. Perceive- Uninterrupted- The uninterrupted threat that followed on his heels seemed in fact to strengthen his will, his passion for the sea, his courage in times of strife and danger.
b. I believe the inciting incident was when Stefeno was little and with his father on the boat. Stefeno saw the Colomber for the first time and told his father about it, his father then got very worried and made Stefeno go back to land and told him to never leave it. That part of the story has changed about half of his life.
c. I think the climax is when Stefeno is forced to stay away from the ocean and never go back to it. I think that, because he has always wanted to adventure the sea like his father once has, it broke his heart after his father died, because he thought he could not That you should just take chances in life and not hide from things you fear in life. You must face your fears inorder to live life normaly.follow his father's footsteps, but then Stefeno faced his fears and wanted to make his father very proud of him.
d. 1) That you should just take chances in life and not hide from things you fear in life. You must face your fears inorder to live life normaly. 2) He was getting old and he wanted to talk to the shark and ask him why he was doing what he was doing. I know this, because in the story Stefeno says he is getting old and he will soon die, and that he wants to know what the shark owns and he wanted to face it. 3)The shark has followed him for years and he never truly understood it. He knew it was an old tale so, he wanted to find out for himself. He also wanted to try and kill it, before it could kill him. 4) He learned that if he faced his fears sooner that he would have had a much greater and richer life then what he already had and he has also learned that he should have never listen about the tale, also that facing your fears could always have a good out come. 5)The lesson you can learn from this story that facing your fears is never a bad thing. Facing your fears could have a great outcome. You can't always live your life in fear so, live your life to the fullest. Your life doesn't last forever. Taking chances in life and doing what you want to do can give you so much more then just living a "normal" life. Don't let your fears stop you from living big. Also, you should never listen to someone else, you are your own person. They could be wrong, but you will never know until you do it yourself.

We chose this because that is the first time he found out about the colomber and its going to get more intense throughout his life.C.When he went to meet the colomber in the sea. beacause he was going to find out why the colomber followed him and what the colomber wanted from him.I.Is something you learn that you didn't know before which will helps decsision making easier and more positive later in life.Because he kept going out to sea to find out the real truth about the colomber and why he was following him all of his life and why didn't he kill him or devour him.Don't always believe what you hear, it's better to find the truth out for yourself. People may have a different theory than you and might lead you to making decisions that aren't necessary. Stefano's dad told him that the colomber was a creature that would haunt him for the rest of his life, but that wasn't really the case, there's more that meets the eye.

1A(1.You must resign yourself. 2.He knew that outside the Columber was waiting for him, and the columber was synonymous with ruin 3.Seafaring is not for you my son. 4.But the temptation of the abyss had always been greater for him than the joys of a prosperous and quiet life.5.From then on, with every expedient the boy was dissuaded from his desire to go to sea. 6. 7.astonished 8.seaworthiness 9.But Stefano did not slacken. 10.nonetheless
1B( When his father tells him about the Columber.'' No I have never seen it.But from the descriptions I have heard many times I recognize it.''
1C( The climax from the text was the part where stephano went out on the boat to meet the Columber, I chose this because this part had the most tension for me.''Now I am going to meet it'', he announced''It isn't right to dissapoint it.But I will struggle with all my might''
1D1(The lesson is not to go through life just believing what everyone tells you
1D2(Stephano wanted to know if the Columber was real I know this because he asks his crew members if they see it when they’re sailing.(mockingly)''You didn't see a Colmber over there by any chance did you?'' the sailors asked, laughing and touching wood.
1D3(Stephano was always looking over his shoulder to see if the colmber was following him.
1D4(When he finally meets the Columber he realizes he’s wasted his life running from it.
2(Don’t let other people make decisions for you. Maybe if Stephano wasn’t told the Columber would kill him he would have met the Columber sooner and got on with his life.
