Applying the Common Core: The Most Dangerous Game Analysis Name: Elijah Hadeed Directions: Individually, answer each question. Focus on QUALITY of answer over QUANTITY of answer. Get to the point, be specific, and explain exactly what you mean with EXAMPLES from the text. 1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. Hide and seek with weapons.
2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. “A big tree with a thick trunk and outspread was nearby, and climbing into the crotch and spreading out for rest” page: 24 “ But he was not quick enough; the dead tree delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell” Page: 25 With fear again gripping his heart. Heard generals mocking laugh ring through the jungle. Page: 25
3. This story contains both types of conflict. Identify three examples of each (three internal, three external) and provide a brief description and page number of each example. With each example, label it as Character vs. Specific Outside Force or Character vs. Specific Internal Force (i.e. Rainsford vs. Tree/Rainsford vs. Nerves) Internal: Rainsford vs fear Zaroff is looking for him pg. 21. Rainsford vs. curiosity Rainsford stood up on the boat and looked around because of the gun shots page 14. Rainsford vs fear because Ivan had a gun pointed at him page 16 External: Zaroff vs pain the tree fell on his shoulder pg. 25, Zaroff vs Rainsford because he is playing a game against Rainsford pg. 19. Zaroff vs traps the tree is set to fall on him pg. 25.
4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing. He didn’t want to kill humans but now he wants to kill zaroff pg. 23 and 28, He didn’t want to go on the island but then he heard the gun shots and screaming. Pg:15
5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer. Rainsford wins because he killed zaroff and he took over zarofs house and needed to rest

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. My title is The General’s Game, I chose this title because in the story when Rainsford woke up the next day he walked upon a house. When he knocked on the door he met the general after he saw Ivan. 2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. On page 20 it says “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder. After that on page 21 it says that General Zaroff is explaining the rules of his crazy game. Finally on page 20 General Zaroff says he invented a new animal.

With each example, label it as Character vs. Specific Outside Force or Character vs. Specific Internal Force (i.e. Rainsford vs. Tree/Rainsford vs. Nerves). Internal- Rainsford vs. Nerves because as Zaroff was hunting him he was saying “I must keep my nerve”. External- Rainsford vs. the ocean is external, in the beginning of the story Rainsford fell off the ship. General Zaroff vs. tree is external because Rainsford set a trap and a tree hit his shoulder. Rainsford vs. Zaroff is external because Zaroff is hunting Rainsford in the jungle

I think that Zaroff has won because at the end he made Rainsford go insane and Rainsford killed him even though in the beginning of the story he didn’t want to hunt humans.

Applying the Common Core: The Most Dangerous Game Analysis Name: Owen Noll Directions: Individually, answer each question. Hunting Isn’t Just A Game
2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title.
Page 14/One reason I picked this title is the fact that Rainsford loves hunting. Page 20/Another is from Zaroff says he wants to have a game to hunt. Page 25/ Lastly, I named it from Rainsford trying to set up traps to get Zaroff to stop trying to kill him in what Zaroff thought was his game he made to kill humans.
Nerves).
External Conflict Page 20/ Zaroff vs. Rainsford because Zaroff is playing a game with Rainsford and they have conflict with each other during the process. Page 17/ Rainsford vs. Ivan because Ivan was pointing a gun at him and exchanging words. Page 14/ Rainsford vs. Captain Niesen because they are on same boat and talk to each other about Ship-Trap Island. Internal Conflict Page 22/ Rainsford vs. fear because he hides from Zaroff to not get killed. Page 14/ Rainsford vs. curiosity because he stands on side of boats from hearing gun shots. Page 17/ Rainsford vs. fear from Ivan pointing a gun at him right when he has opened the door. 4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing.
Page 14/ In the beginning he doesn’t want to go to Ship-Trap Island because of its’ name. Then he hears gun shots and screams of an animal he thought so he instantly wanted to go there because he loves hunting. Page 20/ Another instant is when Zaroff tells him he wants to play a game with hunting. Rainsford did not want to be in the game with hunting. Page 25/ Lastly, a place where he changes is when he told Zaroff he doesn’t want to kill humans. Then Zaroff says the game starts so he hides and sees places where he can set traps. One of the traps almost worked and just hurt Zaroff, but I believe he wanted to kill him at that moment.
5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer. Rainsford has won I believe but it was a tough decision for me because I believe Rainsford is going to turn into the new Zaroff and be the same way he was when people end up on Ship-Trap Island.
