The Colomber Group Tasks Names: Ryan Mengel, Jared Leibman, Nate Knarr PART B – GROUP (42 Total Points)– Recommendation: Complete each section individually, then reconvene as a group and choose the most appropriate answer to use when submitting via the discussion post. This will take time, require individual input, and require discussion. 3. In your group, you will be responsible for completing the prompts found below. All answers must be completed USING COMPLETE SENTENCES (except vocab). a. 5 Integral vocabulary words used in the text. Each word should include a definition and include the sentence where the word was used from the text (10 points). Scrutinized-looked at carefully; After the boy insisted, the father went to get a telescope, and he scrutinized the surface of the sea, in line with the wake. Obstinately-stubbornly, persistently; It was “his” colomber, slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him. Inexorable-unyielding, immovable, unchangeable; He might have moved to the most remote continent, and still the colomber would have appeared in the mirror of the nearest sea, with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument. Abyss-bottomless depth-Great are the satisfactions of an industrious, well-to-do, and quiet life, but greater still is the attraction of the abyss. Placid-calm, tranquil; Officers and sailor saw him disappear down below, on the placid sea, shrouded in the nocturnal shadows.
b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The inciting incident was when Stefano saw the colomber for the first time. We chose this incident, because without him seeing the colomber, nothing in the story would’ve happened. “Papa, come here and see.” The father came, and he too looked in the direction indicated by the boy, but he could not see anything. “There’s a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often,” Stefano said, “and it follows behind us.” ”…That is a colomber. It’s a fish that sailors fear above all others, in every sea in the world.” c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax in the story was when Stafano was lowered down in a small boat to face the colomber. We chose this as the climax, because you don’t know if he’ll kill it or get eaten by it—therefore being a suspenseful moment. “Here I am with you, finally,” Stefano said. “Now it’s just the two of us.” And gathering his remaining strength, he raised the harpoon to strike. “Uh,” the colomber groaned, imploringly, “what a long journey it’s taken to find you. I too am wasted with fatigue. How much you made me swim. And you kept on fleeing. You never understood at all.” “What?” asked Stefano, with the point of his harpoon over the colomber’s heart. “I have not pursued you around the world to devour you, as you thought. I was charged by the King of the Sea only to deliver this to you.” And the shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere. Stefano picked it up and examined it. It was a pearl of unusual size. And he recognized it as the famous Perla del Mare, which brought luck, power, love, and peace of mind to whoever possessed it. But now it was too late.”
d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? A lesson is something that teaches you a value. It is the moral of the story. ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? He wanted to find out what the colomber and its intentions were. We know this, because Stefano was so eager to go out to sea to find out more about the colomber. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? He went mad after a while, because he had a meager knowledge about the colomber and wanted to know more by risking his life. He then felt relieved and sad that he could’ve faced the colomber sooner and received his good fortune. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? Stefano faced his fear and embraced his curiosity and in doing so, he received a pearl of good luck and fortune. He lived in fear his whole life, but then as he confronted his fear with curiosity, he then was relieved and live his feeble years in happiness. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. The lesson is that you shouldn’t let anything get in your way of your true goal. If you have something you want to do; just do it. Stefano finally confronted his fear and conquered his goal. After you have contributed to your group and completed this information, post your answers to the GROUP DISCUSSION PAGE. All group members should be listed in the name category of the post.

The Colomber Group Tasks Names: Aydan Tregear, Jeremiah Atkins, Max Grayek PART B – GROUP (42 Total Points)– Recommendation: Complete each section individually, then reconvene as a group and choose the most appropriate answer to use when submitting via the discussion post. 1. Ominously; portending evil or harm; pg. 36; ‘’Stefano, there’s no doubt, the colomber has ominously chosen you,” 2. obstinacy; the quality or state of being stubborn; pg. 37; ‘’, with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument.’’ 3. seaworthiness; fitted for a voyage at sea; pg. 38; ‘’ Stefano began to sail, giving proof of his seaworthiness,’’ 4. more-ambitious; having more ambition/eagerness; pg. 39; ‘’, setting out with more-ambitious aims’’ 5. phosphorescent; glowing; pg. 39; ‘’, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere.’’ b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The inciting incident from the text is when Stefano first sees the colomber. This is the inciting incident because this sets the rest of the story into motion. “Stefano, what are you doing there, standing so still?” the captain asked his son, finally perceiving him on the stern as he stared at the waves. “Papa, come here and see.” The father came, and he too looked in the direction indicated by the boy, but he could not see anything. “There’s a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often,” Stefano said, “and it follows behind us.” “Despite my forty years,” said the father, “I believe I still have good eyesight. But I see absolutely nothing.”
c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax of this story is when Stefano meets the colomber. This is the climax because the story leads up to this point. Having said this, he took his leave of the crew, ordered a small boat to be lowered into the sea, and boarded it, after he made them give him a harpoon.
“Now I am going to meet it,” he announced. “It isn’t right to disappoint it. But I shall struggle, with all my might.” With a few weary strokes of the oars, he drew away from the side of the ship. Officers and sailors saw him disappear down below, on the placid sea, shrouded in the nocturnal shadows. In the sky was a crescent moon.
d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? A lesson is an idea that teaches about life. It usually proves a point or signifies something important. ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? Many things made Stefano curious in the story. The main concept that makes Stefano most curious is the mystery surrounding the colomber. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? Stefano’s curiosity overpowered him. This caused him to become old and depressed. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? His curiosity ultimately made him old and sad. It also made him go out to sea to face his fear. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. The lesson of this story is to face your fears when you are young because it could pay off in the end. Stefano was old and tired when he faced the colomber later in his life. It ended up paying off after he was already old. If he would have faced the colomber when he was younger, he may have grown up being happy and wealthy. After you have contributed to your group and completed this information, post your answers to the GROUP DISCUSSION PAGE. All group members should be listed in the name category of the post.

The Colomber Group Tasks Names: Leah Dewald Nick Fry Emma Engbert PART B – GROUP (42 Total Points)– Recommendation: Complete each section individually, then reconvene as a group and choose the most appropriate answer to use when submitting via the discussion post. Phosphorescent is the property of being luminous at temperatures below incandescence, as from slow oxidation in the case of glowing or after exposure to light or other radiation. And the shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere. Intermittently is from time to time. When the boy had gone astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that intermittently rose to the surface at a distance two to three hundred meters, in line with the ships wait. Obstinately is stubbornly, persistently. It was “his” colomber, slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him. Abyss is a deep, immeasurable space, gulf, or cavity; vast chasm. But the temptation of the abyss had always been greater for him than the joys of a prosperous and quiet life. Imploringly is to beg urgently or piteous supplication. “Uh,” the colomber groaned, imploringly, “what a long journey it’s taken to find you. I too am wasted with fatigue. b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The inciting incident is when Stefano’s father tells him that the colomber is following him and he can never go near the ocean again. I chose this as the inciting incident because it is when Stefano’s life really changed for him. After this happened Stefano lived in fear his whole life and the colomber consumed him. “That is a colomber. It’s the fish that sailors fear above all others, in every sea in the world. It is a tremendous mysterious shark, more clever than man. For reasons that perhaps no one will ever know, it chooses its victim, and when it has chosen, it pursues him for years and years, for his entire life, until it has succeeded in devouring him. Listen to me: We are going back to land now, immediately; you will go ashore and never leave it again, not for any reason whatsoever.” c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax of the text is when Stefano goes to see the colomber and faces his fears. This is the climax because every event in the story is leading up to this point. I was charged by the King of the Sea only to deliver this to you.”
d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? A lesson is something that teaches you something ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? The colomber was what caused his curiosity because he didn’t know much about it but knew it was out to get him. iii. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? The main character lived his whole life based on his curiosity about colomber and it ruined his life because he was lining in fear. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. We can learn to face our fears early in life because you don’t want to live your life in fear of something that is not what it turns out to be. Don’t let fear control your life. In the story he learned his lesson because at the end he went to the colomber and learned that he was living in fear his whole life for no reason. Verification- establishing the truth. Still, he returned home for summer vacation, and the first thing he did, as soon as he had some free time, was hurry to the end of the pier for a kind of verification, although he fundamentally consider it unnecessary. Tormented-to be picked on, to be haunted Work, friends, diversions, and first love affairs, Stefano’s life was now well under way, but the thought of the Colomber nonetheless tormented him like a mirage that was fatal and fascinating at the same time; and as the days passed, rather than disappear, it seemed to become more insistent. Slacken-to be lazy not to your fullest But Stefano did not slacken. Siege- the noun or process of surrounding and attacking a fortified place in such a way as to isolate it from help and supplies, for the purpose of lessening the resistance of the defenders and thereby making capture possible After so many years, even supposing that all the stories his father told him were true, the colomber had certainly given up its siege.
