Hostile- unfriendly, antagonist “So the idea of that hostile creature waiting for him day and night became a secret obsession for Stefano.” 4. Sinister- Giving the impression that something harmful or evil is happening or will happen. “At a distance of two to three hundred meters from the pier, in the open sea, the sinister fish was moving back and forth, slowly, rising its muzzle from the water every now and then and turning toward land, as if it anxiously watched for whether Stefano was coming at last.” 5. Harpoon- a barbed spearlike missile attached to a long rope and thrown by hand or fired from a gun, used for catching whales and other large sea creatures. “Having said this, he took his leave of the crew, ordered a small boat to be lowered into the sea, and boarded it, after he made him give them a harpoon.” b. The inciting incident starts in the beginning of the book when Stefano sees the Colomber, and his dad tells him he is not meant for seafaring. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax of the story is when Stefano and the Colmber finally meet. At this time, the Colomber talks and there is a great plot twist. This information can be found on page 39 in paragraph seven through eighteen. d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? A lesson is a period of learning or teaching. Some synonyms for the word, lesson, are session, lecture and class. ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? His curiosity started when he Stefano saw the Colomber. He grew even more curious after his father told him how the creature was evil. We know this because after he was told about his curse, he continued to return to the sea. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? His curiosity eventually turned into a fear which took over his actions. As he became more curious, the thought of the Colomber swallowed his brain. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? After a long period of time, Stefano eventually faced his curiosity and fear and confronted the sea monster. If he had done this earlier, he probably would have been granted with the pearl of riches and lived a completely happy life. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. One of the lessons told in the story was don’t assume things you hear from others without finding out if it’s true for yourself. An example from the story is how Stephano listened to everything people said about the Colomber, but in the end he found out it wasn’t true. The climax is when Stefano meets the colomber, because that’s when Stefano realizes that was his father told him was incorrect. d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? The colomber represents fear. You can never run away from fear. Fear needs to be dealt with.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? The colomber is the source of his worry, stress, and curiosity.
iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? His curiosity led to him constantly thinking about the colomber, which led to him getting a boat and dying after meeting with the colomber.
iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? He faced his fears and then dies because the colomber was nothing like he thought.
v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. You cannot run away from fear and death. Don’t overthink everything, live in the moment and enjoy life.

The lesson learned is not to run from your fear. You should face up to your fear and not run. In the story he doesn’t go to see the colomber until he is old and it ruined his life because of how distracted he was about throughout his life.

The lesson from the story is that you shouldn’t let fear control your life. Stefano lets his fear take over and doesn’t live his life to the fullest because he is afraid of the colomber.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? When he first saw the colomber and it started following him. We know this because Stefano kept going back to the sea to see if it was still there. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? He became obsessed with the colomber. Stefano made the colomber his whole life and went back to the sea everyday looking for the colomber. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? The outcome was Stefano became old and bitter. He didn’t live his life out because he was constantly in fear.
v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? The lesson is that you shouldn’t let fear control your life. Stefano let his fear of the colomber ruin the rest of his life and he became bitter and old. You shouldn’t be like Stefano and you should live your life not in fear, but in joy.

Everything you here, might not always be true. They said it would hunt him for his entire life until it kills him. It wasn’t true because it just wanted to give him a pearl.

He was studying it from the land then went to sea to study it closer. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? Him meeting the colomber face to face. Don’t judge something by what it looks like. The colomber was nice even though everyone thought it was mean. And the shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere. Stefano picked it up and examined it. It was a pearl of unusual size. And he recognized it as the famous Perla del Mare, which brought luck, power, love, and peace of mind to whoever possessed it. But now it was too late.
