What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). Stefano claimed to see the Colomber. I chose this as the inciting incident because it is the part of the story that started the action and the conflict for the story. “There is a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often, and it follows behind us.” c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). Stefano meets the shark. I chose this as the climax because all the events after the inciting incident leads up to this part of the story. This part was the moment of greatest tension. “Here I am finally. Now it is just the two of us.” d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? As a noun, a lesson is something that is taught to someone. As a verb, a lesson is to teach or to instruct.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? The floating thing in the sea caused Stefano’s curiosity. It caused curiosity because he didn’t know what it was and when he showed his dad, he looked scared. Stefano wanted to know why his dad was scared and what it was causing Stefano’s curiosity. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? Stefano became curious in the beginning of the story. This curiosity led to Stefano gaining less fear and wanting to go face-to-face with the colomber. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? The outcome of Stefano’s curiosity was that he met face-to-face with the colomber. He also went back out to sea after knowing that the colomber wouldn’t hurt him. v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. The lessoned learned in this story was to face your fear. The lesson to this was if you face your fear you may find out that what you were fearing over is nothing. Stefano decided to face his fear of the colomber and go face-to-face with the colomber, so he then realized that the colomber was not what his dad told him it was. After you have contributed to your group and completed this information, post your answers to the GROUP DISCUSSION PAGE. All group members should be listed in the name category of the post.

a. Seafaring means to travel by sea. (“Seafaring is not for you my son.”) The Colomber, in this book, is a dangerous shark with terrible teeth and a bison like mussel. (…”:no one can see the colomber except the victim himself and his blood relation.”) Hostile is to be unfriendly. (“So, the idea of that hostile creature waiting for him day and night became a secret obsession for Stefano.”) Siege means an enemy surrounds a town or building. (“After so many years, even supposing that all stories his father told him were true, the colomber has certainly given up is siege.”) Indomitable means impossible to defeat. (“An indomitable impulse dragged him without rest, from one ocean to another.”) b. The inciting incident is when Stefano and his dad spot the colomber chasing their boat. This is the inciting incident because ever since Stefano saw it, he thought he would die when he went out at sea. (“ There’s a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often, “’Stefano said,”’ and it follows behind us.”) c. The climax of the story was when Stefano went to meet the colomber face to face. We chose this as the climax because Stefano hid from it this whole life, and when he saw the colomber, it was a huge relief. (“’Here I am with you finally”, Stefano said”) d i. In the story, Stefano finally faced his fear and it didn’t even turn out bad. I think the author is trying to tell us to face our fears because they might not be as bad as we make them in our heads.
ii. Stefano’s was curious since he was a little kid. He always heard myths, but wasn’t sure if they were all true. We know this because he would dream about meeting the colomber. iii. At the beginning of the story, Stefano was a happy kid. As the book went on, he grew more grumpy and miserable because his curiosity got the best of him. iv.Since Stefano’s curiosity got the best of him, it resulted in him meeting the colomber. He got so sick of wondering, and didn’t want to die not knowing what the colomber was.
v. We can learn to not let our fears scare us too much, and to face them. Stefano was scared his whole life which resulted in misery. If you don’t face your fears, you will go your whole life not knowing what that was like, and end up miserable like Stefano.

3a. Indomitable means impossible to subdue or defeat. The sentence it’s used in is “An indomitable impulse…”. Placid means not easily upset or excited. The sentence it’s used in is “…on the placid sea…” Intrepid means fearless or adventurous. The sentence it’s used in is “…and his intrepid spirit.” Abyss means a deep or seemingly bottomless pit. The sentence it’s used in is “…but greater still is the attraction of the abyss” Astern means behind or toward the back of a ship. The sentence it’s used in is “When the boy had gone astern…”.
3b. The inciting incident was when Stefano sees the colomber for the first time when he was younger. It shows the problem that Stefano has for almost the entirety of his life. “Although the ship was indeed moving fast, carried by a great quarter wind, that thing always maintained the same distance. And though the boy did not make out what it was, there was some indefinable air about it, which attracted him intensely.”
3c. The climax was when Stefano approached the colomber when he was old. Stefano’s problem is finally solved and he no longer has to worry about the colomber. “He did not have to work very hard. Suddenly the colomber’s horrible snout emerged at the side of the boat. “Here I am with you, finally,” Stefano said. “Now it’s just the two of us.” And gathering his remaining strength, he raised the harpoon to strike”

One of the lessons that can be learned is that you can’t judge something by its appearance. Stefano learned this after he approached the colomber. He realized that it wasn’t anything to be afraid of, even though it looked like it was.

The shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old captain a small phosphorescent sphere. Phosphorescent- to glow 3. When the boy had goon astern, he stopped, his curiosity aroused, to observe something that’s intermittently rose to the surface at a distance of two to three hundred meters, in line with the ship’s wake. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). I think that the inciting incident was the part of the story when Stefano’s dad told him about the Colomber. I chose this because it started the main conflict and changed Stefano’s whole life. “It’s the fish that sailors fear above all, in every sea in the world. c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax from the text was when Stefano decides to go face the Colomber. This the point that Stefano has been living up to his whole life, his fear to face the Colomber. “Now I am going to meet it”, he announced. It isn’t right to disappoint it. But I shall struggle with all my might.” d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? Not everything is as it is said to be. Don’t judge a book by it’ cover.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? The colomber caused curiosity for Stefano. We know this because he went back to sea to see what he had been thinking about since the first time he saw the colomber with his dad. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? He became obsessed with finding out about the colomber and what he wanted. Stefano became old and still was at sea to test the colomber if he would still fallow him. Once he became very old he decided to face the thing that hunted him from when he was little. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? It lead him to find out the colomber was not what he thought. The colomber only had a message for him.
v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. One lesson that we can learn is that things are not always what they are said or known to be. In the story Stefano’s dad tells him that the Colomber is feared by every sailor. The lesson is learned because near the end of the story, that is not true because Colomber is the exact oppsite and actually gives Stefano something. After you have contributed to your group and completed this information, post your answers to the GROUP DISCUSSION PAGE. All group members should be listed in the name category of the post.
