To conquer your fear. This story shows you that in the end, when Stefano finally faced the Colomber, that everything went well, but he didn’t face him when he was younger, giving him a bad life. It tells us to conquered our fears, because if we don’t, we wouldn’t in peace, but in fear.

Instead of finding or learning for himself, Stefano became curious of the Colomber stalking him over the tides. Only until he had become at the end of his life did he brave up to meeting the Colomber.

a. 5 Integral vocabulary words used in the text. Each word should include a definition and include the sentence where the word was used from the text (10 points). ~ placid- unconquerable; not easily discouraged or defeated—Officers and sailors saw him disappear down below, on the placid sea, shrouded in the nocturnal shadows. ~ reentered- the port, and on the pretext of a sudden illness—Having said this, he immediately reserved his course, reentered the port, and on the pretext of a sudden illness, he put his son ashore. ~ inexorable- unyielding; immovable—He might have moved even to the most remote continent, and still the Colomber would have appeared in the mirror of the nearest sea, with the inexorable obstinacy of a fatal instrument. ~ obstinately- stubbornly; persistently—But looking carefully, Stefano could perceive a small black point which intermittently surfaced on the water: It was “his” colomber, slowly moving back and forth, obstinately waiting for him. ~ sever- separate; break or cut off—He knew that this was his curse and his penalty, and precisely for this reason, perhaps, he did not find the strength to sever himself from it. b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). Stefano thinks he sees the Colomber. Now I am worried about you. What you see rising from the water and following us is not some object. That is a colomber. It’s the fish that sailors fear above all others, in every sea in the world.
c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). Stefano meets the Colomber. 3. In your group, you will be responsible for completing the prompts found below. All answers must be completed USING COMPLETE SENTENCES (except vocab). a. 5 Integral vocabulary words used in the text. Each word should include a definition and include the sentence where the word was used from the text (10 points). Colomber- A creature in the sea that followed Stefano around almost his whole life. “ and still the colomber would have appeared in the mirror of the nearest sea,” Seafaring- Traveling by sea. “Seafaring is not for you, my son.” Courage- The ability to do something that frightens one. “his courage and times of strife and danger.” Stefano- A boy who wanted to prove his dad wrong. “Stefano who had never been on a ship, happily wandered around on the deck,” Verification- the process of establishing the truth, accuracy, or validity of something. “the first thing he did as soon as he had free time, was to hurry to the end of the pier for a kind of verification.”
b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The inciting incident is that Stefano sees the colomber. We chose this because it’s what stirred up the story. “Papa, come here and see.” “There’s a dark thing that rises in the wake every so often.”
c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The climax is when Stefano quits his job and goes back on the water. We chose this part as the climax because it was an important part of the story. ”Stefano was hardly twenty-two years old when, having said goodbye to his inland friends and resigned from his job, he returned to his native city and told his mother of his firm intentions to follow his father’s trade.”
d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? A lesson is a thing you learn and you take in the information and use it later in life when needed.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? Stefano had curiosity when he first saw the colomber. We know this because he kept asking his dad what that thing in the ocean was.
iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? He found out the colomber was bad, so his father told him he couldn’t sail anymore. So, it developed the curiosity in the story.
iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? Stefano had then later learned in his life that the curiosity of the colomber wasn’t what he thought it was.
v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. A lesson learned from this story is too don’t let curiosity stop you from doing what you want to find out/ do in your life. This relates to the story because Stefano had to give up sailing since the colomber had stopped him from what he loved doing. After you have contributed to your group and completed this information, post your answers to the GROUP DISCUSSION PAGE. All group members should be listed in the name category of the post.

a. 5 Integral vocabulary words used in the text. Each word should include a definition and include the sentence where the word was used from the text (10 points). Stefano- the main character of the story, has a curse on him ” When Stefano Roi was twelve years old, he asked his father, a sea captain and the owner of a fine sailing ship, to take him on board as his birthday gift.” Colomber- the creature or shark following him ”That is a colomber. It’s the fish that sailors fear above all others, in every sea in the world. It is a tremendous mysterious shark, more clever than man.” Ship- the vessel Sefano sails on throughout his life “ He sailed and sailed, and in the wake of his ship, day and night, in good weather and in storms…” Doomed- likely to have an unfortunate and inescapable outcome; ill-fated. ”…it means that one of us is doomed.”
Seafaring- traveling by sea “Seafaring is not for you, my son.” b. What was the inciting incident from the text? Explain why you chose this as the inciting incident. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). The crew telling Stefano the Myth. “… It is a tremendous, mysterious, shark, more clever than man. For reasons that perhaps no one will ever know,” This starts Stefano’s life worrying about the creature. c. What was the climax from the text? Explain why you chose this as the climax. Include the excerpt from the text that shows when this happened (5 points). When Stefano meets the Colomber, the shark gives him a pearl. He does not die from the Colomber. “And the Shark stuck out its tongue, offering the old caption a small phosphorescent sphere.” I chose this because it has the most tension in the short. You want to find out what happens in the story.
d. There is a lesson to be learned from this story. Answer each below with a minimum of two complete sentences (22 points): i. What is a lesson? Don’t let your fears stop you from accomplishing what you want to do in life. Don’t let what other people tell you dictate your actions.
ii. What caused curiosity for the main character? How do you know this? What caused curiosity for Stefano is not knowing what the Colomber wanted. The myth of the creature is what drove him to buy a boat. iii. How did this curiosity lend to the character developing in the story? It lead to Stefano sailing. He sailed all of his life. iv. What was the outcome of the main character’s curiosity? Stefano became bitter. He was unhappy because he kept traveling all of his and not making friends.
v. After reviewing all content from the story, what lesson can we learn from this story? Write a one sentence statement of the lesson that can be learned and back it up with an example of how that lesson was learned in the story. This should be a minimum of three sentences. The lesson that I took from the story is believing what people tell you can lead to unfortunate actions. “…it pursues him for years and years, for his entire life, until it has succeeded in devouring him.” From this information, Stefano let this dictate his actions for years to come. In all reality, the Colomber was nothing.
