a. Stefano’s behavior was that he was curious if there was a Colomber in the ocean or not and he continues his life and risk at sea is because he wants to find out if it’s real or not.
b.I truly think he would have panicked because his dad would have never told him about this creature that lived in the ocean and would have panicked and could have been bit or maybe even worse.
c.The “monster” that would have kept him from sea would be the fear of death or something along those lines that was more of a mental worry than a physical worry.
d.The author is telling us that Stephano is a brave kid that he is scared of a monster, but has the urgency to find out if the monster is real or not.
e. Abyss, Devour, tremendous, impulse, intrepid

With the exception of the vocabulary, each question requires responses of complete sentences. The questions are as follows (12 points): a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? Stefano was curious by the time he grew old. He risked his life at sea so he could find out if the tale was true. When curiosity got the best of him, he then found out that the tale was false. It gave him something instead of devouring him.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? If Stefano faced the colomber earlier in his life he would have proved the story wrong. He would have also gotten the Perla del Mare sooner. It would have brought him love, power, and peace of mind. Considering that he waited he didn’t have much use for it because he was dying.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. If there wasn’t a colomber, Stefano would have still gone back to sea. The reason he would have is because he wanted to become a great captain just like his father.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. The author is trying to tell people, don’t judge things or people by what they look like. Everybody thought the colomber was a mean killing sea creature, when in reality he only wanted to give Stefano a gift that would bring him many great things. Some people may not look the same as others, but that doesn’t mean you actually know what they are like.
2. As you read individually, use the space below to find 5 INTEGRAL VOCABULARY WORDS from the story. Type them here. You’ll use these words in a group discussion later (10 points). Ominously, pretext, masts, intermittently, and dissuaded.
