The Colomber Individual Tasks Name: Jeremiah Atkins Directions: Every individual should complete this document. Answer the questions below to the best of your ability. PART A – INDIVIDUAL (22 Total Points) 1. Individually, read The Colomber, pages 35 – 40 in your textbook. Answer questions a-d below. When you have them answered, copy and paste your answers to the appropriate discussion thread online for a classwork grade. With the exception of the vocabulary, each question requires responses of complete sentences. The questions are as follows (12 points): a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? I think that he continues to risk his life at sea because he wants to follow in his fathers footsteps and make a living on the open sea.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? I think that the colomber would have given Stefano the pearl and Stefano would not have been old and weary at the end of the story.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. Stefano’s monster was his calling to go to the sea. I think that it was his calling to go to the sea because every time that he came home he went to the port to see if the colomber was here.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. The author trying to tell us that you should not believe what everybody says all the time no matter how much you trust them. I know this because Stefano told his dad that he saw the colomber and his dad to him him the fable.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? It is the life he wants to live and he doesn’t want to give it up no matter what.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He wouldn’t be as rich but he would be living the life he wanted to.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. What his dad told him coming back to haunt him, a hallucination.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. Follow your dreams and not everything people say is always true.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? His curiosity is more stronger than his power of will.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? Stefano would have had great power, wouldn’t live his life in fear of the sea, and he could of continued the family business earlier.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. If it wasn’t real, Stefano’s fear would be his imagination, his curiosity , and trust in his father.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. He is trying to tell you to overcome your fears and don’t let your fear overcome you.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? He continues to risk his sea life because he is brave and likes taking risks.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He would have changed his life forever. It would have been better because the he wouldn’t have been so angry.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. It would have been just a shark.

How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? I explain his behavior very erratic because he never gave up on trying to find The Colomber. He was also very adventurous because he like to sea travel. He was brave also.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He properly be confused because he would be to young to realize that this mysterious creature wasn’t real. He was have also been confused about the sea and what was in it
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. Stefano kept on coming out to the sea to face his fears to find out if what was true was real.

a.Stefano’s behavior can be explained as curious and determined. Though it doesn’t work, he continues to risk his life at sea because he wants to face what he believes is coming without fear. b.I believe that if Stefano faced the colomber earlier in life it wouldn’t have killed him because I don’t think the colomber is real. It is just Stefano’s fear and imagination getting the best of him. c.The colomber isn’t real, but Stefano believes it is. The monster that kept him coming to sea is his curiosity and fear. d.The author is trying to tell us that things may not be what they seem and you shouldn’t let fear get in the way because it can ruin your life. 2.Five integral words from the story are scrutinized, monster, obstinately, indomitable, and abyss.

1. a) He continued to risk his life at sea because he wanted to follow is father’s trade and he wanted to know if the colomber would keep chasing him. b) Stefano would have had a much better life if he had faced the colomber earlier because he wasted decades of his life being chased and being scared. c) The “monster” that kept him going back to the sea was fear. d) Don’t let being scared of something come between you and what you love.
