1. He enjoys being at sea and is brave enough to go out, even though he thinks he will be devoured.
2. He would not have been driven mad. Stefano wouldn’t have had a pressing obsession to go out to sea, and he would never would have been scared that a beast was pursuing him. In other terms, he would have had a calm, tranquil, prosperous life.
3. Stefano’s monster would have been the adrenaline rush that being at the sea gave him. It was an addicting compulsion that kept him coming back for more.
4. The author is trying to tell us to not let anything get in the way of what we love doing or our goals. The colomber was an obstacle that kept Stefano from doing what he loves—going out to sea.

A.He continues to risk his life, because he starts having an obsession with the Colomber.
B. I believe that Stefano probably wouldn’t have been as smart and would have done something really stupid.
C. It was the guilt of betraying the family, because his father worked trade at sea, so it would have been dishonorable if he didn’t set sail.
D. The author is trying to tell us that you should never judge anyone, because they can only be trying to help you.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? I think being as unhappy as he was he just wanted to either kill it or have it kill him. He has always wanted to sail as a kid and follow in his footsteps.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He would be rich, be a sailor in joy, and spend more time at sea with his father.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. Him drowning in the deep blue sea.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. Don’t shy away from fear look up to it and stand up to it, you might get a big pearl.

Directions: Every individual should complete this document. Answer the questions below to the best of your ability.
PART A – INDIVIDUAL (22 Total Points)
1. Individually, read The Colomber, pages 35 – 40 in your textbook. Answer questions a-d below. When you have them answered, copy and paste your answers to the appropriate discussion thread online for a classwork grade. With the exception of the vocabulary, each question requires responses of complete sentences. The questions are as follows (12 points):
a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea?
Stefano continues to risk his life at sea because he wants to know about the colomber and why he is after him.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life?
I think that he would have received his prize much earlier in life and he would have been a lot happier throughout his whole life.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer.
I believe that the ‘’monster’’ that kept Stefano coming back to the sea was the idea of fear surrounding the sea and its inhabitants.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain.
I feel that the author was trying to convey the idea that you should face things earlier in life because it can pay off in the end.

A.Why we may want to stick around to our fears is to examine it. Sometimes people will go as far away from their fears as possible, but some will stick around to see what is it that makes them fear it. He may also have continued because since it’s been with him for so long it may have mentally “trapped” him in his own world of fear. B.He wouldn’t be afraid anymore knowing that the colomber wasn’t a threat and wouldn’t have to waste his life in fear.
C.It was more of himself, he only saw an image and heard of something horrible that made him feel uneasy but didn’t know that it wasn’t a real threat. So it would be more of himself if that monster hadn’t existed
D.That when you begin to fear something and it takes over you, you can waste your life being in constant fear of it. Or, you could face your fear and it can turn out to be not as bad as you anticipated.

How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? The description of Stefano said he was a curious kid always was asking questions. He wants to know why he is cursed the captain of ship said he was cursed when he saw it on the boat with his father.
b. I thought of two different things one is that he would get very scared and never go back to the water. The other thing is maybe the Colomber would have gave him the circle shaped pearl to Stefano early in his life not until he was an old man.
c. I think it was his self-conscious because his dad kept him away from his fear, but when his dad died he bought a boat. Later on in his life he brought an officer with him and that’s when he solved his fear.
d. The author is trying tell us about fears Stefano was scared his entire life then one day he faced it and it turned out that the Colomber was trying to give him something.

a. His behavior was like he was getting creeped out but he still wanted to find out what the creature was. He continues to find and try to kill the Colomber.
b. I think that Stefano would have just thought it was his imagination. Then when he turned 20 years old he would start to worry and do the same things that Stefano did in the story now.
c. I think that the monster would have been his self-conscience. He was thinking too much of the colomber and it finally got to him. He kept on screaming what is that in the ocean but no one ever saw what he saw.
d. Don’t always believe in your gut’s feeling. He was thinking of the monster to much that he started seeing things that other people couldn’t see.

1. a- I think Stefano's behavior is very curious and brave because he keeps going to the pier and doing more research on the colomber and why it is after him of all people.
b- He would have been less afraid because he would have known why the colomber was after him and he would have went back out to sea.
c- Stefano's "monster" was his own fear because he let it control his entire life and he believed all of the stories and myths about the colomber.
d- Throughout "The Colomber", the author is trying to explain that you can't let fear get in the way of your goals because that will keep you from doing great things in the future.

a. Stefano is drawn to the sea and even when he is inland, hundreds of miles away from the Colomber, he still fears it. in his dreams, thoughts, and over all daily life the Colomber controls him. Eventually, he can't take it anymore so he faces his fear even though is is life threatening.
b. I think Stefano would have done a lot of things different because he would not be living his life in fear. He probably would not have moved, stopped fishing, or died early because the Colomber controlled his whole life.
c. I think it was his father that was the "monster" because he wanted him to come back to sea. I believe this because he was fishing with his father when he saw the Colomber. Also after his father died I felt like Stefano was drawn to the sea even more.
d. Over all his whole life he feared this harmless creature and it consumed him. Until one day he faced his fears and he found that there was never anything to be afraid of in the end.

Stefano continues to go out to sea because he wanted to give proof of his worthiness his resistance to fatigue and his intrepid spirit.

He would have gone out and been frivolous with his life and did something stupid and gotten eaten.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer.
The monster that kept coming back would be a shark because a colomber was a type of shark so it would have been a shark if the colomber wasn’t real.

The author is trying to tell us that if you look closely you can see your cause of death like Stefano saw his cause of death the colomber.

a. He loves being out at sea. He wants to follow his father’s footsteps and live his childhood dreams.
b. He would have been able to be at sea without having to run and have fears of the sea. He also would have had luck, power, love, and peace of mind because of the pearl the Colomber had given him.
c. I believe that Stefano’s monster is the idea that there was something trying to keep him away from the sea.
d.I think the author is trying to tell us that we shouldn’t run from our fears because if we face them, there could possibly be great rewards.

He wanted to find out what was following him and wanted to get rid of the colomber by sailing away from it.

He would have lived a much happier life and not have to worry about the colomber.

Stefano’s monster was his himself because he wanted to know exactly what was out in the sea.

That Stefano is extremely interested in the colomber because it follows him.
