1a)Even though Stefano is being pursued by The Colomber, he enjoys the sea too much to give it up. He also enjoys the rush of the constant pursuit. 1b)If Stefano faced The Colomber earlier in his life, he probably would’ve lead a great life with wealth and power. 1c)If Stefano’s ‘monster’ wasn’t real, it was probably his love of the sea manifested in what he thought of as The Colomber. 1d)I think Dino Buzzati is trying to tell that with great risk comes great reward, or to not be afraid of the unknown. When Stefano finally faced The Colomber, with the thought that it was going to kill him, it instead gave him the Perla del Mare, which would’ve made his life better. If the author was trying to say do not fear the unknown, the same explanation can be used from with great risk comes great reward. Stefano feared the Colomber the entire time, thinking it would eat him. It instead was trying to give him a great life. 2)Indefinable, Dissuaded, Siege, Proprietor, Imploringly

1a. Stefano’s does not appear to be as afraid of the colomber as you’d think. He’s more obsessed with finding out what the colomber wants and if the stories his father told him were true. Especially since his father forced him to go back to shore as soon as he’d found out about his son’s ability to see the colomber. Stefano wants to see what his father’s so afraid of, and he wants to meet his fate.
1b. He would have found out that the colomber wasn’t trying to kill him, like the stories said. He would have found out that it was trying to give him the Perla del Mare. He could have lived a less stressful life.
1c. Stefano is obsessed with finding out what lives in the dark abyss of the ocean. He may be afraid of what lives in it, but he also just really wants to know. He wants to see why his father kept him out of the ocean for so long.
1d. I feel like it’s saying that if you have a fear or a problem, you should just face it head on instead of running from it your entire life. When Stefano finally went up to the colomber, the outcome wasn’t nearly as horrible as he’d thought it was for his entire life.
2. Astern, ashore, seafaring, merchantmen, indomitable

a. Cause he knows it Is his burden and cannot run away from it. b. He would have got the orb earlier and had peace and happiness throughout his life. c. It may have just been his imagination or a trick of the brain and eyes making him appear to see this monster that no one else can see. d. If you face your fears and worries you can beat them or even realize they are not to be feared and can even be amazing. 2. Indomitable, impulse, ambitious, torment, pursues

1A) I believe he stayed at sea because he was fascinated by this shark. He wanted to watch and see it every day but his father said no. His behaviors were only present because he was going against his father for a good reason to him. He also kept sailing to give proof of his sea- worthiness, his resistance of fatigue, and his intrepid spirit. 1B) I think if Stefano faced The Colomber earlier in his life, he would not have asked his father to take him on board for his birthday gift. 1C)The Colomber was not the talking shark that kept him away. It was the fact that it follows you for years waiting for the right time to devour you. 1D) He was trying to show that there is a courageous side to most people. They also wanted to show that Stefano went against his father’s command to show his dad proof that he is determined and brave. 2)Sea Ship Colomber Sea Monsters Wake

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? He kept going back to sea because it is what he loved to do. He knew he would meet the fish someday but his life was at sea.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He would not have been afraid and on the run his whole life.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. It was himself. When he went on the boat with his dad he loved it. He wanted to go back.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. Not everything as it seems. The colomber was not an evil shark. He just had a message.

1A)He continues to risk his life at sea because he wanted to grow up to be a sailor, so he started dialing with a crew to fulfill his young dream despite the huge shark that was following him. 1B)He would have found the sphere earlier and maybe would have had a better life. He wouldn’t have felt followed and would have kept sailing and finding different things in his life. 1C)He was his own monster. He wanted to keep going back to the sea because he wanted to be a sailor at a young age and wanted to be just like his father. So, he would go back to remind himself of what his dream was. 1D)He is telling us that not everything is seem to be or is thought to be. He is telling us in a way to not judge a book by its cover. 2)The words that I found were siege, fatigue, inheritance, assurance, prosperous.

1.(a)I think that Stefano doesn’t avoid his stalker because he doesn’t want his life to be limited by it and its desire to eat him. 1.(b)I think that if Stefano had faced the colomber earlier in his life he would’ve tried to get help of his boat. Then live a glorious life with his stone. 1.(c)If the colomber wasn’t real I think it would be his paranoia of all the dangerous creatures in the sea. 1.(d)I think the author is trying to tell us that we shouldn’t run away from our fears. 2.1. Indefinable 2. Perceiving 3. Subsequently 4. Phosphorescent 5. Siege

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? Stefano decides to not stay away because he was always in love with the sea and sea creatures, even at a young age. He said when he was little that he wanted to go to sea and take control of boats bigger and better than his fathers. And yet Stefano stuck with it and didn’t go back to the shore. b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? I believe that it would’ve been harder for Stefano if he was at a younger age because he wouldn’t have had as much background knowledge as he did being older. Something bad could’ve happened because he most likely had more strength at an older age than a younger age. c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. Stefano’s monster that kept him going back to sea other than the colomber was fear. I believe that Stefano was afraid to go back to sea because he wanted to stay on good terms with his father and if he went back to sea he didn’t think his father would approve of him. The shark is his father’s angel. d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. I think that the author is trying to say that you should follow your dreams even if it means facing your fears. 2. a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? Stefano wants to carry on his father’s tradition, even if it risks his life. He also truly enjoys being at sea and nothing is going to stop him. When he found out about the colomber he hid for most of his life, but he got tired of hiding and wanted to see the sea again.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? The colomber definitely would have killed him. The only reason why it didn’t was because I was tired chasing him all over the world.

If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? Stefano wanted to prove a point, he wanted to show the colomber that he wasn’t afraid. He wasn’t going to let a shark scare him. He wants to outgo his father’s legacy and stay out at sea. He wanted to show his worthiness.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He most likely wouldn’t have been unhappy in his life. He wouldn’t have made it almost like a goal in his life to out run the colomber. He would’ve been able to actually have a life and not have to be constantly worrying about the shark trying to kill him.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. Stefano kept coming back because he wanted to follow in his Father’s footsteps. His father might have been bringing him back to sea. The colomber might have been symbolizing his father.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. I think the author is trying to tell us not to run away from our fears, and face them. If Stefano would’ve faced the colomber back when he was a boy he wouldn’t have spent his life running from him.
2. As you read individually, use the space below to find 5 INTEGRAL VOCABULARY WORDS from the story. Type them here. You’ll use these words in a group discussion later (10 points). One word you could pick is ominously. Another word you could pick is fundamentally, inexorable, precisely and, trudged.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? His behavior is strange yet completely understandable. He was anxious all the time and just wanted to be out at sea like his father had once done. When he realized he couldn’t run away any longer from the terrible monster he decided to risk his life for adventure and have the life he always had wanted at sea.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He would have spent his life being happy with good fortune. Stefano’s anxiety and fear over a fish would have never existed and he would have had love, riches, fortune and all that a man could ever want .
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. The fear of the unknown and trying in vain to figure out what he can’t understand. It’s evident he loved the ocean and then a monster came and Stefano couldn’t understand why or what it was, only that he had to be afraid of it. Thus be that he had to fear what he couldn’t understand and that slowly consumed him until he could no longer resist being afraid and became a captain.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. That you have to confront your fears and that fact that you can’t always know what you want to know, but at the same time you can’t fear what you don’t know. Except it then confront it.
2. As you read individually, use the space below to find 5 INTEGRAL VOCABULARY WORDS from the story. Type them here. You’ll use these words in a group discussion later (10 points). 1.) Imploringly 2.) Disproportionate 3.) Slacken 4.) Scrutinized 5.) Obstinately
