a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? It was his dream to be like his father.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? I think the same thing would have happened.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. It was the feeling that he couldn’t accomplish what he wanted to be.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. It is trying to tell us that our fears may not be as bad as what you thought.

a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? I think he was brave to go out to sea with a monster following him, but he also kept doing it because his dreams were to sail all across the seas like his dad.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He would have gotten the message earlier and no one would have had to be worried his whole life.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. I think that the monster was Stefano’s worries and troubles because he was scared as a child to follow his dreams to be like his dad.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. The author is trying to tell us to follow our dreams even if they are hard to reach because in the end it was worthwhile.

1. Individually, read The Colomber, pages 35 – 40 in your textbook. Answer questions a-d below. When you have them answered, copy and paste your answers to the appropriate discussion thread online for a classwork grade. With the exception of the vocabulary, each question requires responses of complete sentences. The questions are as follows (12 points): a. If you knew that something intended to have you for dinner, you’d probably stay as far away as possible. Stefano doesn’t do that. How do you explain his behavior – why does he continue to risk his life at sea? He continues this because of his passion for the sea and not to disappoint his mother. Stefano still went on it seemed like without fear, but he was scared. He was scared of this beast yet he loved to sail that much he kept going on, watching it.
b. What do you think would have happened to Stefano if he had faced the colomber earlier in his life? He wouldn’t have had to go through all the running. If he knew why the beast was friendly he wouldn’t have had to run and watch and fear. If he faced it earlier, he would have had a happier life in my opinion.
c. Let’s assume that the colomber wasn’t real. If it wasn’t, what was Stefano’s “monster” that kept him coming back to the sea? Explain your answer. It’s like fear and unknown in one. You might fear something because you don’t know what it is and why it’s there and you won’t stand up to it.
d. There’s more to this story than meets the eye. What is the author trying to tell us through the story of Stefano in The Colomber? Explain. The author is trying to say that don’t let fear control you. Don’t let it keep you from doing what you love. He is saying you should face your fears.

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how
2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. • (Pg. 20) “Good god, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder”. • (Pg. 25) The general was saving him for another day’s hunt. • (Pg. 26) He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable.
3. This story contains both types of conflict. Identify three examples of each (three internal, three external) and provide a brief description and page number of each example. With each example, label it as Character vs. Specific Outside Force or Character vs. Specific Internal Force (i.e. Rainsford vs. Tree/Rainsford vs. Nerves). • Rainsford vs Zaroff pg. 24 external • Zaroff vs. Tree pg. 25 external • Rainsford vs. Dogs pg.26 external • Rainsford vs Fear pg.24 internal • Rainsford vs Hunger pg. 28 internal • Rainsford vs Bravery pg. 28 internal
4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing. • The Malay Mancatcher • Burmese tiger pit • Madama Butterfly
5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer.
