1.Nature, what I mean by nature is human nature if you are someone who lives alone and hunts you will begin to change your nature and drive you mad to the point of hunting something more difficult like what zaroff does. 2.“And I never grow bored now, for I have a quarry with which I can match my wits.” He after so long off being bored of hunting animals became bored to the point of hunting humans that can match him.(page 20)
“If he does not wish to hunt I turn him over to Ivan.” He is willing to let his companion murder a man because he doesn’t want to be hunted.(page 22)
“He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” He had just murdered Zaroff and now lies in his bed with no intention of leaving. 3. He kills Zaroff and is perfectly ok with it he just lies in his bed and sleeps. The message of this book is everybody has an evil side Rainsfords’ comes when he is fine with killing Zaroff. 4.Rainsford vs. Tension He is being hunted by another man. “I must keep my nerve.” (page 24) Rainsford vs. curiosity he hears gunshots and goes after them. Rainsford sprang up to the rail mystified. (page 15) Rainsford vs. insanity He kills a man and lies in his bed. “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” (page 28)
Rainsford vs. Ivan “in his hand held a revolver pointed right at his heart.” (page 16) Rainsford vs. hounds “Your Burmese tiger pit has claimed one of my best hounds.” (page 26) Rainsford vs Zaroff “ Get ready General Zaroff.” (page 28) “his whole idea was putting distance between himself and zaroff” He at the begin is thinking logically by wanting to put space in between him and Zaroff. (page 24) “”His hands were tight as he felt someone from the darkness opening them” When his hands are closed he fells sane but slowly insanity is opening his hands and making him crazy. (page 26) “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” He is now fully controlled by his insanity to the point of after a murder sleeps perfectly peaceful in his bed. (page 28) 6. 1.Chateau:Large country house. His eyes made out the shadowy outlines of a palatial chateau. 2.Purdey’s: British manufacturer of hunting weapons. I hope the jaguar guns we have come from Purdey’s. 3. Brier: tobacco pipe made from the root of a brier tree. Rainsford, reclining in a steamer chair indolently puffed on his favorite brier. 4. Crimea: Area in Ukraine borders the black sea. He was a very rich man, with a quarter of a million acres in Crimea. 5. Pol Roger: Brand of champagne. With it he had a bottle of Pol Roger.

1. In one word, re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. All people can be evil. 2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. 1) “Thank you I am a hunter, not a murderer.” (p.21)- General Zaroff hunts people instead of animals, because it’s a lot more of a challenge. 2) “The knife, driven by the recoil of the springing tree, had not totally failed” (P.27)- Rainsford killed Ivan with a contraption made from a knife and a tree. It was meant for Zaroff not Ivan but he doesn’t care. 3) “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided” (p.28)- Rainsford kills Zaroff and sleeps in his bed. 3. At the end of the story, there is a very unique change for Rainsford. What happens/what is this change? How could this change/event influence our interpretation of a message in this text? Explain. At the end of the story Rainsford changes, he changes because he was forced to kill men for his survival. This can change the message in this text because it shows everyone can be evil. It shows this because in the beginning Rainsford was against the killing of people and by the end he has to kill to survive.
4. This story contains both types of conflict. Identify three examples of each (three internal, three external) and provide a brief description and page number of each example. With each example, label it as Character vs. Specific Outside Force or Character vs. Specific Internal Force (i.e. Rainsford vs. Tree/Rainsford vs. Nerves).
EXTERNAL Rainsford vs. Zaroff (24-28)- Zaroff is trying kill Rainsford for sport. Dogs vs. pit (26)- Rainsford makes a trap for Zaroff but the dog falls in it. Ivan vs. knife(27)- The knife comes down and kills Ivan INTERNAL Zaroff vs. insanity- He wanted to kill people for fun Rainsford vs. nerves- He has to keep calm in order to run away Rainsford vs. tiredness- He slept in Zaroffs bed
5. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing. Sleeping in Zaroff’s bed(p.28)- He killed him right before he slept in his bed Showed up in Zaroff’s room and killed him(p.28)- He said it was wrong to kill humans and he went and killed Zaroff He set up traps(p.27)- He sets up traps with the attention of killing a person even though he said he was against it
6. 5 Vocab Words that are not defined for you. These words should greatly influence your interpretation of the text. Define each, and provide the sentence where each was used in the text. Cannibals-eating your own kind-“Even cannibals wouldn’t live in such a Godforsaken place.” Dense-closely compacted together-“ Dense jungle came down to the vary edge of the cliffs.” Menacing-suggesting the presence of danger- “The menacing look in the eyes did not change.” Grisly-causing horror-“ I can’t believe you are serious General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke.” Hotly-In a passionate or angry way-“ But they are men,” said Rainsford hotly.”

1. The Hunter.
2.He had to kill General Zaroff. Page 28. Rainsford studied with a lot with hunting and always wanted to try it. Page 18. I hunt the scum of the Earth. Page 15
3. Rainsford changed at the end of the story. Rainsford defeats General Zaroff and it changes his mindset of hunting.
5. “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” He said that because he defeated General Zaroff. Page 28. He turned kind of devilish because of how he killed someone. Page 28.
6. Placid- not easily upset or excited. That had been a placid pastime compared to his digging now. Executed- put into effect. He executed a series of intricate loops; he doubled on his trail again and again, recalling all the lore of the fox hunt and all the dodges of the fox. Protruding- sticking out. His foot touched the protruding bough that was the trigger. Appraising- “ …appraising him narrowly…”

1. Hunting the Greatest Hunter.
1.Hunting tigers ceased to interest me years ago. Pg19 2.But no animal can reason objected Rainsford but there is one that can.pg20 I live for danger Mr. Rainsford. Rainsford then hunted zaroff. the change was that after rainsford killed zaroff, he slept in zaroff’s bed and even enjoyed it. This twist in the story could completely change the message due to how rainsford is going against everything he stood against about murder. With him even stating that this was the best bed he had ever slept in which showed that he had no regret of killing Zaroff.
External, Rainsford vs. Zaroff pg. 28 when Rainsford killed Zaroff. External, Rainsford vs. nature pg. 15 when Rainsford fought the current to try to swim to shore. External, Zaroff vs. nature pg22-28 when Zaroff is trying to hunt Rainsford. Internal, Rainsford vs. self pg. 22-28 when Rainsford is running from Zaroff. Internal, Zaroff vs. self pg. 22-28 when Zaroff is hunting Rainsford. Internal, Rainsford vs. society pg. 22-28 when Rainsford is being hunted all of the people in the area are hunting him. One instance is when rainsford made a malay man catcher in an effort to stop zaroff. This shows that hes thinking by coming up with creative ways to stop zaroff and that he is developing into a cunning man. When he sleeps in the bed is most likely the largest change of character. Mainly because of how he changed so much. At the beginning he was all against murder and then he kills zaroff with no regret. He is using traps against animals against humans shows he is getting more desperate.
Jungle- land covered with dense vegetation. Hunting- the practice of killing or trapping any living organism. Melee- refers to disorganized close combat. Yacht- a recreational boat or ship. Mansion- a large dwelling house.

4.Rainsford vs. Zaroff-he kills zaroff page28 Rainsford vs. Ivan- he kills Ivan page27 Rainsford vs. Dog- he kills a dog page26 Rainsford vs. clear headedness- he can’t be clearheaded page24 Rainsford vs. fear- he couldn’t sleep the night before the game page 22 Rainsford vs. nerves -he must keep his nerve page 24 5.He changes his tactics he goes from evading zaroff to setting traps for him. Mindset the way he thinks like when it first starts he is worried about avoiding zaroff by the end he kills zaroff page 28. 6.Yacht- a medium sized sailboat for cruising or racing. "Can't see it," remarked Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.
Slender- Barely sufficient in amount of basis or gracefully thin. There was a chance that his cries could be heard by someone aboard the yacht, but that chance was slender and grew more slender as the yacht raced on. Bleak –charmless and inhospitable; dreary. bleak darkness was blacking out the sea and jungle when rainsford sighted the lights. Menacing-suggesting the presents of danger; threatening. The menacing look in the eyes did not change. Cultivated- try to acquire or develop. In a cultivated voice marked by a slight accent that gave it added precision and deliberateness, he said, "It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home."
