1. I retitled the story to danger awaits.
2.Page 23, general Zaroff says “You’ll find this game worth playing my brain versus your brain.” Page 26, Zaroff’s dogs were coming for him so if he waited it would be suicide Rainsford said so he climbed back up the tree. Page 24 after the deal Ivan came him khaki clothes then he walked out into the woods the gates closed behind him.
3.). Page 25 Rainsford set a trap on Zaroff then Zaroff hurt his shoulder on the branch, the conflict is external (Zaroff vs. tree branch) (Rainsford vs. fear) that is an internal conflict it occurs in his mind. (Zaroff vs. Rainsford) that conflict is external the page number is 25. (Zaroff vs his mind) that is an internal conflict he thinks of ways to capture Rainsford. (Rainsford vs. his mind) this is an internal conflict when he falls off the boat he thinks of what he can do, page number 13 and 14. Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff which is external conflict.
4.. On page 25 Rainsford sets a trap on Zaroff which shows us (the readers) that Rainsford is changing. Rainsford is trying to survive so he is thinking, changing and developing. Also, on page 26 Rainsford does Burmese tiger pit trap on Zaroff. This means that he keeps on trying to survive and he gets smarter he knows a little bit about his opponent. 5.Rainsford survived the 3 days in the jungle while Zaroff while he was being hunted. So you think he has won the game but Zaroff only wanted him to kill someone and he did he killed Zaroff. So they both won the game technically.

1. I think this story should be re-titled “Hide and Seek”
2. I chose the title, “Hide and Seek” because the most of the story is based on both Rainsford and General Zaroff hiding from and trying to seek each other in 3 days (page 23). In addition, I chose this title because Zaroff says on page 23, that Rainsford can’t go home until he wins the bet between the two. Lastly, I chose this title because Rainsford needs to beat Zaroff in order to leave the island. If he doesn’t, he has to stay on the island (page 23).
3.Internal conflict- Rainsford vs. Curiosity: Rainsford’s curiosity led him to go to the railing and fall off the boat (page 14); Rainsford vs. Nerves: He has to calm his nerves at the beginning of the hunt (page 25); Rainsford vs. Fear: Rainsford is scared of being found by Zaroff. External conflict- Rainsford vs. Zaroff: The two men hunt each other for 3 days (page 23); Zaroff vs. Tree: Rainsford made a trap for Zaroff, and when he triggered it, the tree fell and skimmed Zaroff’s shoulder (page 25); Rainsford vs. Boat: Rainsford goes to the railing of the boat, but he dropped his pipe, went to grab it, lost his balance and fell off.
4.On page 24, Rainsford is close to being seen by Zaroff, so he doesn’t set a trap. The next time he spots him, which was on page 26, he sets a trap for Zaroff, but accidentally traps one of his best dogs. This shows that Rainsford improved in skill. Rainsford has also improved of being brave because at the beginning of the hunt, Rainsford was scared for his life. But then towards the end of it, he has become more confident and survived the hunt. Lastly, he improved because he never wanted to kill anyone, but then he ends up almost trying to kill Zaroff.
5.Rainsford has won the hunt because at the very end on the story, on page 28, Zaroff tells Rainsford that he has won the hunt, and that he can go to sleep, while Zaroff goes to feed the dogs. In addition, I think that Rainsford has won the hunt because he improved of being a better hunter.

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. I renamed this title “The Game of Death”. 2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title.
One specific example is where Reinsford kills Zaroff. A second example is where Reinsford kills Ivan. A last example is where Reinsford tries to hurt Zaroff by using traps.
3. This story contains both types of conflict. Identify three examples of each (three internal, three external) and provide a brief description and page number of each example. With each example, label it as Character vs. Specific Outside Force or Character vs. Specific Internal Force (i.e. Rainsford vs. Tree/Rainsford vs. Nerves).
One internal conflict is between Reinsford and him keeping his nerve, Reinsford vs. nerve Internal Force. I found this on page 24 were Reinsford was saying “I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve.” The second internal conflict is Reinsford vs. his conscious, Reinsford vs. curiosity this was on page 14. One external conflict is Zaroff vs. the traps I found this on page 25. Another external conflict is Reinsford vs. Zaroff this was throughout most of the story.
4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing.
One example is on page 27 when he does the trap. Another example is on page 25 where Reinsford makes a trip wire. Another example is when Reinsford swam to Zaroff’s house.
5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer.
I think that Zaroff won because Reinsford has killed Ivan and Zaroff only wanted to get Reinsford to kill a human.

1. Hunters Madness 2.. Page 24 “The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face.” The general decided to let him live because he didn’t think the game would have been fun if he killed him right away. Page 20 “I wanted the ideal animal to hunt’” explained the general “So I said: ‘What are the attributes of an ideal quarry?’ And the answer was, of course: ‘It must have courage, cunning, and above all, it must be able to reason.’” The general is talking about hunting humans. Page 23 “My dear fellow,” said the general, “have I not told you I always mean what I say about hunting? This is really an inspiration. I drink to a foeman worthy of my steel—at last.” The general was looking forward to hunting down Rainsford. 3.Rainsford vs. Zaroff- external Zaroff hunts him down pg 24 Rainsford vs. quicksand-external He gets stuck in quicksand pg 26 Rainsford vs. Ivan- external He is at gunpoint at the door pg 16 Rainsford vs. nervousness- internal He gets really nervous running from Zaroff pg 25 Rainsford vs. curiosity- internal He is curious on what the animal like sounds were pg 15 Rainsford vs. fear-internal Rainsford is afraid of dieing pg 25-26
4.Page 25 Rainsford was thinking quick and climbed into a tree to avoid Zaroff, but is found by him anyway and is spared for that day. He hadn’t thought much of what he wanted to do.
Page 25 Rainsford creates a trap to hurt Zaroff it works but not well. He is starting to develop plans on surviving.
Page 27 Rainsford jumps off the edge of the cliff to avoid the dogs. It shows that he would put his fears aside to save his own life
5.. I believe that Rainsford has won the game because he did not get killed by Zaroff.

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. I would re-title this story Hunt or be Hunted. 2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. I would call it this because in the story Zaroff gives Rainsford the opportunity to hunt with him. When Rainsford turns him down Zaroff tells him that if they hunt each other and he wins Zaroff will send him back to the mainland. Then Rainsford had to make the decision of staying with Zaroff to help him hunt or to be hunted by him for three days in order to go home.pg;23
Nerves). One example of internal conflict is when Rainsford has to make a decision between fighting aginst or with zaroff. Pg;23 Another example is when he has to find places to sleep and come up with traps for zaroff. Pg24 When he is telling himself not to freak out and ep his nerve and stay calm is an example of internal conflict. Pg24
An external conflict is aginst Zaroff and Rainsford because they are fighting through out the whole story. When Rainsford fought through a bush for two hours that was an external conglict between Rainsford and the bush. Pg;24 When Zaroff gets hit by the tree it is an external conflict between Zaroff and the tree. Pd;25
4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing. over the whole story Rainsford changes because in the beginning he is not interested in fighting zaroff at all but at the end he comes to kill zaroff. He also developed when he sets a trap for zaroff with the tree because he is coming to the realization that he could have to kill some one to get home. Pg; 25
5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer. I think that Zaroff has won the game because the whole time I think that he wanted Rainsford to take his place. When Rainsford sleeps in his bed I think it really shows that he has taken Zaroffs place and then that is when Zarofff leaves because he has accomplished what he wanted to do.

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. How to hunt a human.
2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title.
Page 20,”I wanted to the hunt the ideal animal”. Page 20, “hunting? Good god, General Zaroff What you speak of is murder”. Page 22, “suppose he refused to be hunted”.
Nerves).
Internals: Rainsford vs. fear, he feared for his life, Rainsford vs. curiosity, that caused him to fall off boat, Rainsford vs. self, didn’t want to kill . External: Rainsford vs. zaroff, they hunted each other, tree vs. zaroff, the tree that hit zaroff by the tree trap, Ivan vs. knife, Ivan got killed by knife.
4. Rainsford develops over the course of this text. Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. 5. Look at the last several paragraphs of the text. According to the story, Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff’s bed, meaning that Zaroff has been defeated. Who has won this game? Explain your answer. Zaroff won, because he wanted to make Rainsford to kill a human.

1. The story should be titled “The Hunt”. 2. Three instances that support the title “The Hunt” are when General Zaroff tells Rainsford what type of “animals” he hunts on page 20, when Zaroff first starts hunting Rainsford on page 24, and on page 14 when Rainsford and Whitney discuss the sport of hunting. 3. Three examples of external conflicts are Rainsford vs. Zaroff on page 24 when Rainsford is first being hunted Rainsford. Rainsford vs. Dog on page 26 when Zaroff sets his best dog I pursuit of Rainsford. Rainsford vs. The Sea on page 15 when Rainsford struggles in the sea trying to get to safety. Three examples of internal conflict are Rainsford vs. fear, throughout the story Rainsford is afraid of being caught by Zaroff. Rainsford vs. Curiosity on page 14 curiosity gets the best of him, he leans over the rail, and then falls into the ocean. Rainsford vs. Nerve, throughout the story Rainsford tries to remain calm and repeats that he will keep his nerve. 4. On page 25 Rainsford is tired of hiding and chooses to set a trap for Zaroff. It shows he is changing because for the first time since being in the hunt he fights back. Rainsford clearly develops on page 26 when he sets another trap for Zaroff. It shows that he is becoming smarter and has more of a killer instinct. He developed on page 28 when he swims from the sea and goes into Zaroff’s room. This shows development because he has finally overcome his fears and has resumed his role as the hunter not the hunted. 5. I believe that Zaroff won because though Rainsford survived he lost his humanity and became like Zaroff, which is what Zaroff wanted to happen all along.

1. Re-title the story. The title of the story should reflect the development of the characters, how the story is shaped, and should also reflect a theme. The mystery in the darkness, because Rainsford was curious of the noises he was hearing in the dark and stumbled into the water
2. Provide three specific instances (brief description and page number) from the story that support your new chosen title. Explain how each reflects the new title. Pg.14 “he leaped upon the rail and balanced himselfthere, to get greater elevation;his pipe, striking a rope was knocked from his mouth. He lunged for it; a short ,hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he reached to far and lot his balance. The cry was pinched off short as the blood warm waters of the carribean sea closed over his head.
Nerves). Internal- zaroff vs boredom, Rainsford vs fear, Rainsford vs curiosity External- zaroff vs tree, Rainsford vs sea,Rainsford vs hounds

Find three different instances from the text (brief description and page number) that clearly identify that Rainsford is thinking, changing, and developing. With each of your examples, explain how that specific instance shows us that Rainsford is changing and developing. He did not want to be hunted but he
