1)Montresor could be reliving this even and telling it to everyone fifty years after the murder. He barricaded Fortunato in a room and sucked all the oxygen out of the room. Montresor could be confessing the sin that he did in the eyes of every one. He could be done with his life and just decide to tell everyone of this horrific deed he has done.
2)We know that Fortunato is being led into the vaults by Montresor so Montresor can do something to Fortunato, since Fortunato insulted him. This is a type of dramatic irony because Fortunato expected to be drinking Amontillado, but ended up being tied up with chains and left to die.
3)“And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own.” This was said to Fortunato by Montresor when Montresor was telling him about the Amontillado.
“Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I will positively leave you.” Montresor said this to Fortunato after he locked him up in chains.
4)a.Fortunato’s name is an example of irony because it looks like the word fortunate. Fortunate means to be favored by or involving good luck or fortune; lucky. Since Fortunato was not so lucky in the story it is ironic because you expect him to be lucky since he was well respected or beloved. Fortunato was not the luckiest guy in this case.
4)b.Fortunato was wearing a jester’s costume. Jesters were seen as funny, happy people who brought joy to others. Fortunato didn’t seem so happy or funny as he was locked up in chains and was desperate to get out. He apparently insulted the narrator so I don’t think this was joyful to Montresor.
4)c.The fact that carnival takes place in the streets above the catacombs is ironic because Fortunato is screaming for help and because he is chained to the wall. Montresor starts to scream with him and even louder than him, but still nobody heard them. Carnival is a time of celebration and Fortunato has nothing to celebrate for since he was chained up and left to suffocate.
5)I think Montresor was not a reliable narrator because the entire story could have been based on his insane opinion. Montresor wasn’t very sane, as we viewed this in the story. He ceased his work when building the wall to keep Fortunato in to listen to Fortunato scream and even scream with him at times. Montresor could have imagined the insults just to have a reason to kill Fortunato. Fortunato didn’t seem like the kind of man to insult another because he was the one wearing a jester’s costume and asking about the Amontillado Montresor had. If Fortunato had insulted Montresor, then he would not go see the wine by himself because he would have been worried Montresor had heard about the insults. Fortunato seemed like the kind of man that would only talk to others if they needed help on wine not insult them as Montresor had stated.
