1) He could be talking to us explaing an achievement he accomplished.
2) We know that Fortunato is drinking a lot of wine and is following Montresor down into the catacombs while there was niter on the walls.
Dramatic Irony
3) “For the love of god.” “Let us be gone.”
4a) His name means Good Fortune, but he died.
4b) He was dressed as a joker and a joker is someone who entertains people, but the narrator is getting entertained by killing Fortunato.
4c) People don’t smell the niter, they don’t here Fortunato’s screams, and carnival is supposed to be a happy time.
5) No he is not a reliable narrator because he could have imagined the thousands of injuries or even the insults because no one else knows about Fortunato’s death.

1. To whom could Montresor be talking, fifty years after the murder, and for what reasons?
He could be telling a police officer or some type of law enforcement because it said no one disturbed it until fifty years later which means someone had to discover it.
2. Part of the story's horrifying effect comes from Poe's use of irony. What do we know that Fortunato does not know about why he has been invited into the vaults? Which type of irony is this?
We know that Montresor plans to kill him and Fortunato doesn’t have a clue, which is a type of dramatic irony.
3. Identify two of Montresor's comments to the unsuspecting Fortunato that are verbally ironic. Place them in quotation marks for your answer. “indeed, I had no intention of alarming you unnecessarily.” “in pace requiescat”
4. The story is full of other examples of irony. Explain why each of these are ironic:
a. Fortunato's name the first word that comes to mind is fortune which being buried alive is not something very fortunate.
b. Fortunato's costume because he was dressed as a jester but instead it seems that the joke was on him if you could call it a joke.
c. The fact that Carnival takes place in the streets above the catacombs carnival is supposed to be fun and full of joy but there isn’t anything joyful about being murdered in a quite brutal way.
5. Think about whether or not Montresor is a reliable narrator. Do any details suggest that he might have imagined "the thousand injuries" and the insult - or even the whole story? Explain your answer with support from the text, not just opinion.
No I wouldn’t say he is the best narrator because he does seem to exaggerate like how he said a thousand injuries. I’m sure it wasn’t that many. Then there’s also the fact that nobody else can justify that what he is saying is what has happened or if any of it is has even happened.

1. I think Montresor might be talking to his family because he is very old and wants to confess before he dies.
2. Something we know that Fortunato does not know about why he has been invited into the vaults is that this is a Poe story and that they do not usually end very well. The type of irony used is dramatic irony.

5. I think Montresor is not a reliable narrator because he is crazy and killed someone for no reason. I think he made up “the thousand injuries”.

- Montresor may be talking to nobody but is rather writing it all down somewhere because he needed to confront himself on it whether that be talking to somebody or writing it down. Murder is something that will never leave you alone, even when nobody knows what you did, it will haunt you, which is re reason to why he needs to coincide with what happened.

-We know the Montresor is trying to kill Fortunato by bringing him into the catacombs so that he could dispose of him without anybody knowing. This type of irony is dramatic irony.

-This is ironic because the idea is that they are all have a good time while they are having fun on top of the area that a bunch of people have died in

-Insanity is something by itself, and seeing that he was able to remember everything In such detail must mean that it actually happened otherwise it wouldn’t have come back to haunt him.
